Our History

We have been established since 1981, teaching English as a Second Language to students of all ages in the city of Kota Kinabalu and representing schools, colleges and universities all over the world.

We were founded in 1981 by Founder and CEO Datu Casey Leong Khee Cheang, and started in a one-storey flat in Bandaran Berjaya, KK town.

Datu Casey , Masters of Language Teaching from Edinburgh University and a Bachelors of Arts from Otago University, New Zealand, was a former Principal of SMK Tamparuli for 5 years before he started his own School of English Language.

In 1983, the British Council approached him to start the education counselling arm of IEC and thus the Further Studies services side began.
Sunny Garden
IEC moved to its current location in Sunny Garden, Mile 1.5 Tuaran Rd., and expanded to 2 floors of classrooms for weekly students for English.

Our universities also grew from representing not just the UK but Australia and USA as well.
Expansion of operations
Further Expansions to the office was necessary as the school grew and the number of universities represented grew as well to cover Canada, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia.
IELTS Preparation Course
The IELTS preparation course was introduced at IEC and students are given the opportunity to prepare for this internationally recognised exam in a conducive and effective enviconment.
More Universities
Private Universities in Malaysia and Singapore start growing exponentially and IEC's list of represented universities expands to over 100 institutions including over 35 within Malaysia and Singapore.
First PTE Academic Test Centre
IEC becomes the first PTE Academic Test Centre in East Malaysia and still remains the only one at the time of writing. In the same year, IEC also opened its dance studio, one of its kind in Sabah as it is a multi-purpose hall to host events, dance, theatre rehearsals or IEC school presentations.
IEC Sandakan
IEC Sandakan opened its branch under its capable representative Ivy Fung at Prima Square, Sandakan.
Swiss Hospitality School
Swiss Hospitality schools are newly included in IEC's pool of represented institutions.
